Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” is one of the most iconic music videos of all time. It has Springsteen’s trademark high-energy LIVE performance footage. It was shot by iconic filmmaker Brian DePalma. It even introduced an unknown actress called Courteney Cox to the world. Plus the song ruled the airwaves in the 80’s.
But did you know there was an earlier version of the video . . . that SUCKED BAD?
It was just Bruce dancing awkwardly in front of a dark background – so a literal interpretation of DANCING IN THE DARK.
Columbia Records president Al Teller saw it and (rightly) thought it was hot garbage. So that’s where director Brian DePalma came in to shoot the version we all know and love.
But Teller held onto a master videotape of the original . . . containing four separate versions of it. And now it’s on the auction block through October 22nd. As of last night, the high bid was $2,500.
