I’ve recently found out that I have two things in common with bears.
(A) We both like to fatten up before (and during in my case) for the winter.
(B) We both view farmer’s markets as our own personal buffet.
This was the case recently in Aspen, Colorado where a bear helped itself to the picnic basket that is (well…was) a bread and pastry stand at the local farmer’s market. Bear claws were not on the menu but instead all over the baked goods.
Witnesses recorded the scene as Aspen police, and a Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer responded and scared the bear away. It ultimately climbed a nearby tree and eventually fled back into the woods.
Wildlife officials say Colorado is seeing a record number of bear encounters this year because extreme drought has reduced natural food sources.
This also being Fat Bear Week makes a lot of sense as bear entitlement is at its seasonal peak.
