Dictionary.com named “maxxing” its 2026 Word of the Year, highlighting society’s obsession with optimizing everything from appearance to fitness and productivity. But with words like “affordability” also on the shortlist amid rising costs of housing, groceries, and healthcare, choosing internet slang over an issue affecting people’s everyday lives feels out of touch and says a lot about what gets attention versus what actually matters. For this Dictionary.com should feel shame, shame, shame.
