Yesterday, we shared the story of scientists in New Zealand who found someone’s still-functioning USB drive in seal poop and are looking for its owner. (Of the USB stick, not the poop.)
NIWA is searching for the owner of a USB stick found in the poo of a leopard seal…

Recognise this video? Scientists analysing the scat of leopard seals have come across an unexpected discovery – a USB stick full of photos & still in working order! https://t.co/2SZVkm5az4 pic.twitter.com/JLEC8vuHH0
Well today it’s another swallowed camera, although this one didn’t have to brave a digestive tract.
Erik Storm, a tour guide based in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, lost his GoPro camera in a spot that was slowly filling with lava. After the lava flow had cooled into rock, Erik came back. “I used a geology rock hammer* to pull it out of the lava and thought it was a total loss.”
But the camera had not only survived, it had managed to record the encroaching lava flow… and was still working with a functioning SD card.
Erik shared the video online. “The camera even still worked although not as well as it did before.”
*If you also immediately thought of The Shawshank Redemption when you read, “geology rock hammer,” then you’re as big a movie nerd as me.
