Republican U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson of Oshkosh is on a list of officials banned from Russia.
That country’s foreign ministry says Johnson knew that before he tried to get a visa for a trip with other members of Congress.
Johnson has been outspoken against Russia and President Vladimir Putin. He also supports additional sanctions against the country.
A spokeswoman for the foreign ministry says they created a banned list because the U.S. put “unfounded restrictions” in place against members of Russia’s upper parliament chamber.
