Scammers are apparently going after members of churches in northeast Wisconsin.
Pastor Randy Ott of Morrison Zion Lutheran Church believes someone sent text messages, posing as him, after getting phone numbers from the church’s newsletter. The texts were asking people to send money for gift cards for someone in a hospital and in need.
Lt. Jason Jost of the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department says scammers often try to play off their target’s emotions. He recommends that people stay calm and do some research. He says they should also call the person the text claims to be from to make sure it’s legitimate.
Pastor Ott says he reached out to other churches in the area, to warn people about the scam.
