The largest community in Outagamie County thinks the county should continue to own the outdoor warning sirens.
Appleton’s city council is going on the record urging the county to rethink a plan to transfer ownership of the sirens to local governments. Members voted 13-2 Wednesday night to support the idea of using revenue from the upcoming half-cent county sales tax to pay for the system.
Ald. Kyle Lobner doesn’t think it’s safe to have 21 different communities decide what to do with the sirens. He says people all over the county count on them to find out that dangerous weather is approaching, and the system needs to be reliable.
The county board wants each community to pay to maintain and replace the sirens.
