A report shows the number of domestic violence deaths was down last year, and a group hopes a state program is helping.
End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin says 38 people died because of domestic abuse, compared to 45 in 2017.
Spokesman Tony Wilkin Gibart says some departments trained officers on how to recognize high-risk situations when they’re on a domestic abuse call. He says they ask victims 11 questions.
If police believe people could be at risk, he says they explain that to the victims and connect them with local programs.
Some departments in northeast Wisconsin have the program in place.
