A proposal to build a parking lot on the site of the former Blue Ramp, next to Appleton’s City Hall, isn’t gaining much traction.
The municipal services committee opposed the idea on a 3-1 vote.
Ald. Patti Coenen thinks redeveloping the land is a better option. She says she’d have a hard time taking the property off the tax roll, especially in an area that needs a facelift and some positive activity.
She thinks it would really nice to have better parking in that area, for people stopping in to pay a water bill or signing up for a parks and recreation department program. But she says more people are also doing things like that online now.
There have been concerns about the availability of disabled parking spots around the City Center after the city tore down the ramp.
The parking lot would cost $220,000. If the city would also build a new ADA accessible entrance to City Hall, the price tag would rise by another $200,000.
The city council still has to weigh in on the proposal.
