There’s now a train whistle ban in Appleton.
It means engineers can’t blow their whistles along the main line that cuts across the city. The ban took effect shortly after midnight.
Public Works Director Paula Vandehey says the new quiet zone doesn’t cover other rail lines in the city, or if there’s an emergency on or around the tracks.
The process of getting a quiet zone took about four years. The city had to upgrade safety at a number of crossings. Officials also had to wait more than a year for the Federal Railroad Administration to approve the quiet zone.
