A rainbow flag will be flying outside Appleton’s City Hall today for the first time.
It’s National Coming Out Day, and a number of businesses are also showing their support by flying the flags. Two local business groups worked to hand them out along College and Wisconsin avenues.
City Diversity Coordinator Karen Nelson says they want to send the message loud and clearly that Appleton is a welcoming and inclusive city.
The fountain in Houdini Plaza, in the downtown, will also have rainbow lights.
The group Diverse and Resilient is celebrating the day by opening its first Appleton office. It’s in the 400 block of W. Wisconsin Avenue. The organization works to prevent violence and domestic abuse.
