Governor Evers insists he has the public in his corner, in the fight against Majority Republicans in the Legislature over gun laws.
He was in Green Bay this afternoon to push for universal background checks and a “red flag” law. He says he wants to start with those bills, because they’re ones people agree on, including gun owners in the state.
Last month’s Marquette Law School poll shows 80 percent support stronger checks, including 75 percent of people with guns in their house. Eighty-one percent with guns in their house backed a “red flag” law.
Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald announced yesterday he’ll close the governor’s special session, without holding hearings or any debate on the gun bills. He says there isn’t support to tackle the two issues.
