Governor Evers is getting a letter from about 250 legal and political experts, calling for Brendan Dassey’s release.
Attorneys for Dassey officially asked the governor earlier this month to pardon the convicted murderer or shorten his sentence.
Today’s letter comes from experts on juvenile justice, psychologists, and others supporting Dassey. They include Innocence Project Co-Founder Barry Scheck, and Sister Helen Prejean from the movie “Dead Man Walking.”
Many of them think Dassey was wrongfully convicted of the 2005 murder of Teresa Halbach. They say the process that led to the verdict in the case was indefensibly flawed. They’re also calling his sentence of life in prison, without the chance for parole until 2048, “wildly inappropriate.”
Dassey has been in prison for more than 13 years. He turned 30 years old last Saturday.
His uncle, Steven Avery, is also serving a life sentence, but without the possibility of parole.
