Oshkosh will have a lot fewer ash trees over the next couple of years.
City Parks Director Ray Maurer says they haven’t been able to stop the spread of the emerald ash borer. He says the number of the tree-damaging insects have exploded, especially on the west side.
So far this year, Maurer estimates they’ve cut down 70 ash trees. He expects at least that many will be coming down next year.
The Oshkosh Forestry Division had been treating a number of trees around the city, in hopes of slowing or stopping the spread of the ash borer. Forester Bill Sturm says they don’t have enough funding to treat all of them.
