Governor Evers is putting a minimum prison sentence of five years in place for killing someone in a drunk driving crash.
He signed a bill into law yesterday.
Judges would still be able to sentence someone to less than five years, if they find a compelling reason.
The state corrections department estimates the change will increase prison costs by about $525,000 a year.
