A former mayor of Appleton passed away earlier this month.
James Sutherland was the city’s leader from 1972 to 1980. He lived in Santa Barbara, California, but he was in Indianapolis when he died of heart failure on December 14th.
Current Mayor Tim Hanna says over the years, Sutherland would stop in the mayor’s office from time to time to talk. He says Sutherland was a big proponent of the downtown, and seemed to like how things were going.
Sutherland ran for another term, but he lost to Dorothy Johnson in 1980. For a year after that, he toured the U.S. with his family.
