Some state auditors are going after out-of-state companies, and they’re bringing back nearly twice as much revenue as initially hoped.
State Revenue Secretary Peter Barca says they collected nearly $12 for every $1 spent on the special program. The state brought in almost $160 million dollars this year. The goal was $82 million.
Barca believes they could get even more money, if the state added 20 more auditors to the program. He says Majority Republicans in the Legislature removed the proposed positions from the state budget.
Barca says the initiative also helps level the playing field for Wisconsin-based businesses that have been paying all of their taxes.
