While 11 candidates campaign for Appleton mayor, there’s a proposal to have a city administrator.
Alds. Patti Coenen and Cathy Spears are asking the city council to consider the possibility of hiring someone to handle the day-to-day operations.
Coenen is concerned the only qualifications for mayor are to live in Appleton, be 18 years old, and not have a felony conviction. She says the city’s leader has to oversee a $190 million budget, and many city departments.
The council decided not to study the possibility 4-1/2 years ago. Coenen believes it’s a good time to take it up again, now that Mayor Tim Hanna isn’t running for re-election.
She says there are several qualified candidates in the race, and that has nothing to do with the proposal.
The primary is February 18th.
