Appleton’s parks and recreation department plans to replace the universal playground at Memorial Park on the north side this year.
Director Dean Gazza says it’s been there longer than people may think. He says the equipment has aged, and they’ve had to put numerous patches on the rubberized surface.
The city budgeted $650,000 for the project.
Gazza says they’re also looking to build a new trail in the park, to connect to McDonald Street on the west side of the park. He says that would give people another entrance.
At some point in the future, Gazza says they’d like to build an underpass of Northland Avenue, to give people a safer way to get to the park from the north.
The parks department also plans to put in a new playground at Pierce Park, once the weather warms up. Gazza says they had to hold off on the project last fall, because the ground was too wet.
