The state is expected to bring in an additional $818 million, and it’s not taking long for lawmakers to come up with ideas on what to do with it.
Republican leaders in the Legislature are pushing for a property tax cut.
Democratic Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz of Oshkosh hopes to use some of it for school-based mental health programs and the UW System.
Hintz thinks property tax relief would be popular, but they also have to make sure any permanent tax cut wouldn’t impact future budgets. He believes they can get a number of things done without playing political games.
Half of the surplus automatically goes into the state’s rainy day fund. Hintz says they’ll have to decide whether to put more money in it.
