Governor Evers is proposing to use $250 million from the state’s budget surplus on public schools, and to cut property taxes.
He’s calling a special session of the Legislature to take up his plan.
The governor is including $10 million to expand the rural sparcity aid program. He hopes that will help districts avoid going to referendum every couple of years to continue their programs.
Evers wants to put $130 million of the money toward lowering school property taxes.
Majority Republicans in the Legislature are working on a plan to reduce taxes, without spending more on schools. Evers believes lawmakers can do both.
