The opening weekend of the sturgeon spearing season might be a little slower this year.
DNR Fisheries Biologist Ryan Koenigs believes the ice conditions on Lake Winnebago will keep some people home. He hopes the temperatures will be colder over the rest of the season, so the ice gets thicker.
Koenigs says spearers are reporting seven to 10 feet of visibility on the big lake.
He expects the season to last the full 16 days on Lake Winnebago. It would be cut short, if they hit any of the harvest caps on females, juveniles, or male fish.
