A congressman from Green Bay is trying to deal with a backlog of immigration cases in the federal court system.
About 1.1 million amnesty claims are currently pending.
Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher thinks those cases would move faster, if judges could hold people in contempt, if they’re purposely delaying hearings. Under federal law, immigration judges don’t have the same power as federal and state judges to hold people in contempt.
Gallagher’s working on a bill to allow that.
