Sturgeon spearers had some more success this year, despite the tough ice conditions over opening weekend.
They got more than 800 fish from Lake Winnebago and the upriver lakes. That’s up three percent from last year.
DNR Fisheries Biologist Ryan Koenigs believes it was an odd season. He says there were more people out on the ice during the second weekend, compared to the opener, and that’s rare.
Koenigs says the ice conditions, and water clarity improved throughout the 16-day season and that also made a difference.
Nearly 500 of the sturgeon came from Lake Winnebago. Another 320 were caught on the upriver lakes.
