UW-Oshkosh is switching from using coal to heat the campus to natural gas.
The last shipment of coal arrived today.
Campus Sustainability Officer Brad Spanbauer says coal releases twice the amount of CO2 into the atmosphere. He says natural gas is also cheaper.
The university expects to save money by getting rid of equipment that was needed for the coal system. Spanbauer says they also won’t have to pay workers to take the coal ash to a landfill, or pay the landfill tipping fees.
The state is ending its contracts for coal for schools in the UW System that still use it.
