Wisconsin counties will have to deal with lost revenue and higher costs because of the pandemic.
Wisconsin Policy Forum President Rob Henken says they could take their biggest hit from their half-cent sales taxes. He believes they’ll also have higher costs for health and human services programs and more property owners will fall behind on their tax payments.
Henken says that will lead to some tough choices, like possibly having to reduce the number of seasonal employees.
He estimates sales taxes account for eight to 13 percent of a county’s projected revenues. Only four counties don’t have one.
