One year ago today, Appleton lost a firefighter in a shooting at the downtown transit center.
Driver-Engineer Mitch Lundgaard was on a medical call, and it escalated into a shootout. After crews revived the man with Narcan, the man pulled out a gun and shot Lundgaard.
Fire Chief Jeremy Hanson says firefighters talk about, and are reminded of Lundgaard every day. He says there are still a lot of raw emotions, but they’re definitely healing and moving in the right direction.
He says he struggles to find the words to describe how much the community’s support has meant to the department.
Lundgaard was a 14-year veteran of the department, and he was married with three children.
