Styx singer/guitarist Tommy Shaw and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra in Cleveland, Ohio joined forces to cover Styx’s 1977 classic “Fooling Yourself”. 88 kids (ages 12-18) and Shaw record their parts in their homes for the special performance of the song. This was the first time that the orchestra has played together since their quarantine had started.
The project got started when the orchestra’s music director Liza Grossman contacted Shaw in hopes to bring the kids back together after being apart so long.
Tommy Shaw said the all sent videos recorded from their phones and was blown away by the process and the kids, which are all 18 or younger. The band said on their YouTube page:
“We are still in awe over what these kids have put together, and it was an honor to be a part of their project. Thanks again for letting us in on the fun. Can’t think of any better way to celebrate the anniversary of Grand Illusion. You guys rock!”
Grand Illusion was released on 7/7/77 and was the first of four triple-platinum albums in a row for Styx.
