Space also became an issue for returning to in-person classes in Appleton.
Chief Financial Officer Greg Hartjes says when they surveyed families earlier 35 to 40 percent were looking at five days of virtual learning.
When they asked everyone to commit, he says the numbers fell to 20 percent at the elementary schools, 15 percent at the middle level, and 11 percent at the high schools.
At Appleton East, 90 percent want to be in the classroom. Dividing them into two groups, with two days each, plus including staff, more than 100 people would be in the building each day.
Hartjes adds that’s just one example. He says right now, they’re not as confident they could keep students and staff safely distanced.
