Some people are using neck gaiters instead of masks, but a study from Duke University raises questions about their effectiveness.
They pull up from the neck to cover the lower half of the face.
Prevea Health President, Dr. Ashok Rai tells Action 2 News the research found the fabric could cut large respiratory droplets into smaller ones, and release more droplets into the air. He says it’s best to wear a mask that covers the nose and chin securely.
The Duke study found gaiters might be less effective than not wearing any face covering at all. Rai says there was a very small sample size, and the type of fabric they’re made with also plays a role.
