Appleton leaders could create a separate local law, making it illegal to call 911 to make a false report because of someone’s race, religion, or gender.
The city council will take up the proposal tomorrow night.
Police Chief Todd Thomas admits it’s very rare, but it does happen. He says staff couldn’t remember any specific incident in Appleton in the past.
Thomas says Grand Rapids, Michigan approved a similar law last December, and that city hasn’t had a situation since.
In Appleton, the fine would be $200 for a first offense, and $400 for repeat offenders.
