Governor Evers wants to put a new statue on the Capitol grounds, and it would be the first to honor a person of color.
He’s looking for a $150,000 federal grant, and about two-thirds would be used on the Vel Phillips statue. The rest would go toward the restoration of two Capitol statues that were torn down by protesters in June.
Phillips became the first Black secretary of state in Wisconsin in 1978. She was also the first Black woman to become a judge in Wisconsin.
