Last week Stephen Colbert joked about Milwaukee after the city lost the Democratic National Convention, which become a virtual event because of the pandemic.
The Late Show did a bit about a special virtual tour of the city, which included a virtual tailgate at Miller Park and such “historical sites” as “an abandoned factory” and “an abandoned mall.”
That upset many residents of the Wisconsin city, which lost a projected $200 million in revenue. Now Colbert has apologized.
On Tuesday night’s show, he said, “I would like to address the City of Milwaukee in the official language of the Midwest: the polite apology. Hey Milwaukee. Um, I’m really sorry.”
Then he blamed the video on one of his writers. “This was the fault of one of my writers who, and this is true, is from Wisconsin. He’s probably just jealous of Milwaukee. He’s from Madison.”
Colbert also accepted an invitation from the Milwaukee Brewers, saying, “That’s how nice Milwaukeeans are. You insult them and they invite you to a baseball game. Well, you’re on, Brewers! I would love to join you at Miller Park once it’s safe. My only condition, I insist I get to run in one of your sausage races.”
