Over a 17-year period, the suicide rate in Wisconsin rose by 40 percent.
The state Department of Health Services is partnering with other organizations to develop strategies to reverse the trend from 2000 to 2017.
Mental Health America Wisconsin is one of those groups, and suicide prevention coordinator Leah Rolando believes it’s a comprehensive approach.
The recommendations include expanding mental health and prevention services, suicide training for health care systems, and evaluating existing programs for their effectiveness.
Nearly 900 people died by suicide in Wisconsin in 2018.
