November 12th, 1970 was the day when Oregon highway officials decided to ‘dispose’ of a beached whale by blowing it up with a half ton of dynamite. (SPOILER) It didn’t go as planned. What was planned was for the explosion to disintegrate the whale so that seagulls and crabs would take care of the remaining… remains.
But as the saying goes, even the best laid plans sometimes go awry.
And it went awry in spectacular fashion. Quote the reporter on the scene, “the blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds.”
Now That’s fun word play.
What wasn’t fun were the large pieces of rotting whale meat raining down from the sky like a blubber shower on the assembled media members and curious (but well-behaved) onlookers.
