A Neenah man found guilty of killing two sisters in a boating crash on Lake Winnebago is asking for a new trial. In his appeal, Brian Sullivan claims that he will not get a fair sentence because the judge that presided over his trial–Scott Woldt–has recused himself from the case. Woldt left the case because family members of the victims–Lauren and Cassie Laabs of Neenah–tested positive for COVID-19–while attending the trial in September, but never informed the court. Judge Woldt claims his feelings toward the family and their actions would not allow him to be impartial at sentencing. Sullivan’s boat collided the Laabs boat off-shore from Oshkosh back in August of 2018. He had been facing up to fifty years in prison next month.
