A herd of about 75 cows took a milk break and decided to stretch their calves on an Indiana highway.
The cows took advantage of an opening at their farm to go free-range and hit the highway – at full gallop nonetheless.
Quick thinking on behalf (be-calf) of local sheriff’s department, volunteer firefighters and curious onlookers helped corral the situation before the hot-stepping Holsteins got too far from their farm.
Capt. Derek Allen, an off-duty officer who happened to be nearby in his black and white, got in front of the herd to warn traffic of the living black and whites quickly hoofing it their way.
“I’ve been involved in many unique situations previously, but not something with this many animals on the roadway,” Allen said.
