A South Korean couple mistakenly added their own artistic tag on a $500-thousand dollar piece of art.
In the video below we see the couple at the Seoul’s Lotte World Mall approach the abstract painting and begin to just casually add some paint to the piece.
According to the museum’s description of the piece:
The 95-by-275-inch untitled piece was painted by Paris-based artist JonOne, a k a Harlem-born John Andrew Perello, before a live audience in 2016 — and is valued at a whopping $500,000.
The actual paint cans and brushes used in the abstract painting’s creation were placed in front of the exhibit and are considered part of the piece – which may have given the the wrong impression that it was an ‘interactive exhibit.’
“They thought they were allowed to do that as participatory art and made a mistake,” said Kang Wook, head of the exhibition.
The museum has NOW placed a barrier (wire fencing) around the piece along with a “Do Not Touch” sign to deter others from adding their own artistic flourish.
Maybe that should’ve been done in the first place?
To be completely honest, if you showed me a picture of the piece after the couple painted over it – I wouldn’t be able to tell the before/after difference.
