In a three to two vote, Village of Hobart trustees voted not to merge the police department with the Brown County Sheriff’s Office.
Village President Richard Heidel was one of the three trustees who voted in favor of keeping the police department. He told a packed crowd Hobart has to move on for the sake of the morale of officers and instead invest in its agency.
The village will now look at spending $5 million to build a new police station. That cost will be shared with the town of Lawrence.
Village officials expect to break ground on a new fire department in the next 12 months.
