GREEN BAY, Wis. — The DNR identifies the cause of a recent fish die-off in the Fox River and lower Green Bay waters.
The department says the fish had severe cases of columnaris, a common and widespread bacterial disease of freshwater fish.
Reports of dead fish began back in June, leading to a two-week investigation. It found that nearly all of the fish were adult channel catfish.
While the columnaris bacteria does not infect humans or other animals, the DNR encourages anglers to thoroughly cook their catch, as all wild fish can harbor other bacteria and parasites harmful to humans.
