The movie ‘Singles‘ debuted in theatres 30 years ago – September 18th, 1992.
The film starred; Kyra Sedgwick, Campbell Scott, Matt Dillon and Bridget Fonda but also featured pop-ins from Bill Pullman, Jeremy Piven, Tom Skerritt, Tim Burton, Paul Giamatti, and Eric Stoltz.
The film is primarily known for its soundtrack which – according to its Wikipedia page –
…was one of the first big-selling ’90s movie soundtracks (it went platinum and reached the Top Ten) to feature largely new work from contemporary artists… it’s a milestone in the breakthrough of alternative rock into mainstream popular culture, neatly and effectively packaging the Seattle phenomenon for the wider national consciousness.
‘Singles‘ also went meta with its soundtrack which not only defined the grunge movement in music at the time but also gave many of the musicians cameos in the film. These cameos included members of Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) along with Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) as members of Dillon’s fictional band Citizen Dick. Alice in Chains (full band) also made an appearance in the live music club scene as it was set in the epicenter of music at the time, Seattle, Washington.
‘Singles‘ was served up by Director/Writer Cameron Crowe as a reflective, slice-of-life to the Generation X 90’s and a love letter to a specific place in time that was defined by it’s music. Admittedly, there’s not much to the plot on the surface but it was an engaging (dare I say ‘sweet’) film about the trials and tribulations of navigating relationships – love, work and social. And to those of us who were roughly the age of the characters – the film and it’s music resonated deeply then and still does to this day 30 years later.
