In 2005 a movie was released on HBO about the final few days in the life of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. It was a fictionalized look written by Gus Van Sant. Now according to anyone involved with the film it was “loosely” based on the fallen musical hero. You can watch the movie in full below. 17 years later an Opera was produced based on the film based on the final days of Kurt Cobain and the estate is not happy about it.
The opera was composed by Oliver Leith, the composer-in-residence for the Royal Opera House and it wrapped up its week-long premiere on October 11th.
The Cobain estate released a statement that said, “Last Days has been created and written without permission. This show, just like the movie, is an unauthorized attempt to benefit from the brief meeting set up with Kurt and Gus Van Zant. This one meeting has been exploited for profit for thirty years now and enough is enough.”
A Royal Opera House responded by saying “It is a fictionalized account, and was produced with the permissions of Gus Van Sant and HBO.”
