The “Weenies of the Week” from July 26th are Omah Brown from Milwaukee and Shakerria Ray from Green Bay. These two made headlines after taking police on a wild chase that ended in Fond Du Lac—all in a U-Haul truck.
Allegedly, Brown and Ray had been writing bad checks and forging cashier’s checks to purchase cars, motorcycles, and even houses. You’d think they’d know that financing is much easier at places like Vandervest or Fox Communities Credit Union.
The story took a dark turn when Brown and Ray showed up in Omro to buy a Mustang. When the car’s owner suspected the check they offered was fake, Brown shot him in the hand and then beat him with the gun. The victim ended up losing a finger and needing four staples in his head. Brown and Ray then took his phone and sped off in a rented U-Haul. Naturally, both the U-Haul and the phone could be tracked, so police quickly found them on the highway and the chase was on.
During the chase, Ray called her mother to say goodbye, knowing she was in serious trouble. According to a criminal complaint, Ray had already told her mom about the scheme and how they had previously used it to buy a motorcycle and other vehicles. So she had essentially confessed to everything before getting caught.
While the crimes themselves are no laughing matter, the way Brown and Ray committed them is seriously comical. Forging cashier’s checks, renting a U-Haul for a getaway, and stealing a phone with GPS tracking? They might as well have driven straight to the sheriff’s office and turned themselves in. To top it off, Brown also had drugs on him, including fentanyl, and both had prior arrests for drugs and robbery in other states.
Hats off to the police who managed to handle the situation and arrest Brown and Ray without an extremely long high-speed chase. Not that a U-Haul would make for a great getaway vehicle anyway—those things have the acceleration of a 1930s delivery van.
For being two of the most foolish criminals we’ve seen in a while, especially in a state where getting an OWI seems like a rite of passage, and for choosing a U-Haul as their getaway vehicle when swimming downstream in the Fox River might have been faster, we proudly name Omah Brown from Milwaukee and Shakerria Ray from Green Bay as the Weenies of the Week.
