Starbucks’ new holiday collection includes a $30 beanie-wearing bear glass cold cup. Cute? Sure. Collectable? Sure. Worth getting in a fight over? Debatable and inevitable.
Cue the caffeinated mayhem and welcome to Black Coffee Friday.
Coffee Culture was quick to get jittery about getting their shaking hands on one of these special holiday releases, prompting people to show up early at stores across the country and it wasn’t long after where those hands turned to fists and frustration over empty shelves.
Many fans eager to get their hands on the collectible showed up to Starbucks stores only to find shelves already cleared or containing NONE to begin with. Now, some frustrated customers are accusing employees of buying up the cups before stores even opened, leaving none for the public.
TikTok videos (below) have captured the frustration, with users claiming they arrived early but still missed out.
At some Starbucks locations, some customers actually tussled over the teddy bear cup, which are now going for more than $300 online.
Now, Starbucks is reacting to the cup going viral and apologizing to customers who couldn’t get it. However, the company didn’t specify how many were sold in each store.
“The excitement for our merchandise exceeded even our biggest expectations and despite shipping more Bearista cups to coffeehouses than almost any other merchandise item this holiday season, the Bearista cup and some other items sold out fast,” a spokesperson for Starbucks said in a statement to The Independent. “We understand many customers were excited about the Bearista cup and apologize for the disappointment this may have caused.”
