We are proud to name as this week’s Laura Lee and Cutter Weenie of the Week, Hyler Septic Systems LLC out of Waushara County, or maybe more specifically, the unnamed driver of a leaky vehicle employed by Hyler Septic Systems LLC. This small family-owned company based in Berlin does exactly what it sounds like: they pump, clean, and service septic systems. They clean our poop, and we really hate to have to call out a small family-owned Wisconsin-based company like this, especially since they’ve been in service for over 35 years and, as far as we know, with no problems. Cleaning up other people’s crap is, I’m sure, a pretty thankless job. So here’s what happened. Monday morning (so before the storms) a slippery substance was found on a bridge in Omro. An Omro police officer believed the substance to be cooking oil, actually used cooking oil. The kind one might dump down a drain after, oh I don’t know, cooking with it. That stuff made the road slicker than a lawyer in a cowboy hat, but as dirty as a … umm… a lawyer in a cowboy hat. They had to put down a sand mixture in order to cover up the slick spots, slick spots that left a trail 19 miles long! That’s right, it turns out there was a leak in the tank on the truck, and 300 gallons of used cooking oil had been dripping out onto the roadway since Oshkosh.
“The proper way to dispose of cooking oil is to first let it cool, then pour it into sealable containers, like a jar or a carton, before throwing it away. Large quantities should never go down the drain, as they cause sewer clogs and environmental damage.”
Now the company has offered to pay for any damages this may have caused, which is the thing you’d expect a good family-owned Wisconsin company to do. Of course, now that the roadway is probably a river after record-breaking storms this week, that’s less cleaning they have to do!
So for the drivers, it was less of a commute and more.. accidental slip and slide
For making the roadway greasier than James Dean in a movie about a car
And for… making the roadway less for walking and more for woking.
We are proud to name The unknown driver, the unknown oil tosser, and, because it’s the parent company, Hyler Septic Systems LLC, the people behind this cooking oil catastrophe, as this week’s Laura Lee and Cutter Weenie of the Week.
