On Friday, July 10th, Rolling Stones released another new album called Foreign Tongues, and like their last one, Hackney Diamonds, this album was produced by Andrew Watt and features a slew of guests. The guest list includes Bruno Mars, Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Steve Winwood, Robert Smith from The Cure, and Sir Paul McCartney…again. This list is a little misleading though, as Mick Jagger explains.
“I mean it’s some great names but they don’t do much. I mean, Chad [Smith] plays 24 bars of bass drum on the blues number (‘Beautiful Delilah’), and Bruno plays cowbell for one little bit of ‘Never Wanna Lose You’. I mean Stevie Winwood made a lot of contribution (playing keyboards on nine songs), and Robert Smith sings on ‘Lose You’ and plays some kind of guitar on ‘Divine Intervention’.”
As for Paul McCartney the song “Covered In You” has a little more to do with him, as he explains.
“It’s really nice to just show up at a studio with your bass and just say, ‘Right. Where do you want me? Where do I plug in?’ I mean I think you could have been a bit blase and go, ‘Yeah. Okay. So what?’ But for me it wasn’t. It went the other way. It was like, ‘Wow, there’s Mick. Oop. There’s Keith [Richards]. Ooh there’s Ronnie [Wood].’ It’s not everyone plays with the Stones.”
The song was recorded during the same sessions that the song “Bite My Head Off” was recorded for their last album.
Foreign Tongues is The Rolling Stones’ 25th album, and it’s out now.
