(LAMARTINE, WI) — The Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting resulting in the death of a two-year old child.

Deputies were dispatched to Lamaratine for a report by of a young child had a gunshot wound at a nearby home around 10:26 Friday morning. Lifesaving efforts began within minutes. But investigators say the child died at the scene.

The sheriff’s office says three children were in a car in the driveway of their home while a parent went inside the building. A four-year found the gun in the car’s center console. The gun fired striking the two-year old.

The incident remains under investigation.

APPLETON, Wis–Woodward Community Media General Manager BJ DeGroot has issued the following statement on the departure of KISS-FM morning show host Otis Day:

Day, whose real name is Richard Dey, is the subject of a temporary restraining order requested by WIXX morning show co-host Natalie Jansen in Brown County Court.

According to court filings, Dey and Emily Chagnon of Marion corresponded on social media, exchanging information on Jansen and using fake social media accounts to post denigrating comments about her.

Brown County Sheriff’s investigators initially recommended felony stalking charges against Dey and Chagnon, but the District Attorney’s office chose not to file those charges.

A May 22nd hearing is scheduled to make the restraining orders against Dey and Chagnon permanent.

APPLETON, Wis. — A Hilbert man will spend four years in prison for providing drugs to his wife before her overdose death.

James Barton is also sentenced in Outagamie County Court to 11 years on extended supervision for first-degree reckless homicide.

Barton provided fentanyl-laced cocaine to his wife, Connie, before her death in a Kimberly residence in August of 2022.

APPLETON, Wis. — An investigation continues into a two-vehicle crash on the north side of Appleton.

Police say the cars collided at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Meade Street around 6:50 a.m. Thursday. One of them rolled over and ended up in a business parking lot.

The occupants of both vehicles were taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries.

No other details have been released.

APPLETON, Wis. — A nonprofit group wants to relocate its downtown emergency homeless shelter.

Providence Promise has closed its shelter at St. Joseph’s Church on W. Lawrence Street and has purchased the site of the former Mission Church on N. Appleton Street.

President Steve Wuerger says the shelter will be open on days and nights with extreme cold or heat.

Wuerger also says it will provide more than just a place to get out of the extreme cold or heat.

Alder Denise Fenton appreciates Providence Promise’s efforts to keep a downtown shelter open.

The Appleton Common Council will vote on a special use permit for the emergency shelter next week.

APPLETON, Wis. — Appleton officials hope a “rebranding” will get more people to use downtown parking facilities.

New signs will be put up this summer in the downtown area encouraging drivers to “Park Appleton.”

Manager Hillary Patterman says the utility needed a refresh.

The new signs will feature a large orange “P” and arrows directing drivers to parking options.

APPLETON, Wis. — Valley Transit has a new transportation development plan.

The plan calls for the restoration of services that have been cut in recent years due to a lack of available drivers and expansion of services to new shopping and employment centers.

Matthew Stegeman with SRF Consulting Group says users want greater access to grocery stores.

Stegeman also says riders want weeknight service, expanded routes and more buses running on popular routes.

Weeknight bus service and more service hours on Saturdays were cut in recent years. General Manager Ron McDonald says restoration and expansion will require more than just hiring drivers.

Fox Cities Transit Authority member Larry Wurdinger says any expansion of service will require more money from communities served by Valley Transit.

OMRO, Wis.  — A write-in candidate wins the race for mayor of Omro.

Mary Berndt, whose name did not appear on Tuesday’s ballot, defeated Trevor Chalfant, the only candidate on the ballot, 401 votes to 384.

Berndt mounted a formal write-in candidacy after the deadline to turn in nomination petitions in January.

She is a former member of the Omro School Board.
