The Concert for Bangladesh, August 1, 1971, Celebrates 55 Years of Peace, Love and Music [VIDEO]

Fifty-five years ago this Saturday, August 1st, 1971, George Harrison staged The Concert for Bangladesh, the first of its kind large scale all-star benefit, which paved the way for the likes of Live Aid, Farm Aid, Live 8 and the Concert for New York City.

The two shows — afternoon and evening — were held at New York’s Madison Square Garden to raise money for the refugees from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) at the request of his friend, Indian sitar virtuoso and a composer Ravi Shankar.

Harrison rounded up Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and Badfinger. Clapton, who was addicted to heroin, agreed to participate but only if Harrison would supply drugs. John Lennon was invited, but without Yoko Ono. He reportedly agreed, but then argued with Yoko over it and backed out. Paul McCartney declined in the wake of The Beatles‘ acrimonious breakup the year before. And Ringo Starr crashed the party.

The Concert for Bangladesh, which supported UNICEF’s programs in the country, pioneered the all-star concert benefit model, which continues to move hearts and raise funds today. A three-record set of the show was released later in 1971 and won a Grammy for Album of the Year. It’s been reissued several times since, most recently 15 years ago as a digital download.

Kimberly-Clark donating $10,000,000 to long term tornado recovery

(DALLAS, TX) — Kimberly-Clark announces a major donation to tornado recovery efforts in the Fox Cities.

K-C is committing $10 million over the next three years to help non-profits, local governments and community leaders target where the funds can best be spent.

The three-year commitment is designed to ensure resources are available long-term. Kimberly-Clark was founded in Neenah.

Fox Cities resource center to provide tornado recovery assistance

APPLETON, Wis. — A multiagency resource center aims to bring recovery assistance to anyone impacted by the tornado.

Known formally as the Multiagency Resource Center (MARC), this hub allows residents in need to connect, in person, with multiple resource agencies all in one location.

The MARC will be located at the Mary Beth Nienhaus Activity Center, 3000 E College Ave, Suite B in Appleton.

The nonprofit organizations, community partners, and local agencies will provide information, guidance, and resources for individuals and families affected by the storm. Representatives will be available to assist residents with immediate needs, recovery planning, and referrals to additional services.

This resource center will be open to all Fox Cities residents.

The center will be open 9 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3 – Tuesday, Aug. 4.

We are proud to name as this week’s Weenie of the Week the two people who were arrested in Menasha on Tuesday night for suspected looting.

These are the worst kinds of people, as clean up as begun in this city that has been destroyed by an EF3 Tornado. These two morons decide to break the curfew and start rummaging through the rubble. Not their own rubble, but other people’s rubble. That’s right; they were attempting to loot stuff. When Menasha police approached these two, they just ignored them and kept digging. Now due to this disaster, there is a curfew set in the city limits of Menasha from 10pm to 5am. I know a curfew sounds dystopian, and hey I’d be the first one back in the day to break curfew, but not to go steal other people’s belongings! People whose lives have been quite literally turned upside down. I know where supposed to be making jokes, but I’m actually pissed off about this, looting is stupid anyway but now you’re doing it to people whose lives will never be the same. On Monday morning they woke up like any other day, had some coffee and breakfast and went to work or got their day going, and for so many a few hours later they didn’t even have a house. And while we’re at it, let’s throw those stupid ass scammers under the bus too. Maybe go earn your dollar and buy your dumb stuff instead of ripping off hard working good people, you absolute pieces of garbage.

So for showing all of us that the tornado wasn’t even the trashiest thing that touched down in Menasha this week.

For looting things you can’t even use in jail.. Pretty sure they don’t have Wi-Fi and your cell mate, named Tiny, who always calls the top bunk would shank you for the good gaming controller anyways

Black Sabbath Guitarist Tony Iommi Releases First Solo Music in Over 20 Years [VIDEO]

In 2005 the legendary heavy metal guitarist of Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi released a solo album, Fused. After that, Black Sabbath reformed as Heaven and Hell with their second singer, Ronnie James Dio. After his untimely death, the original Black Sabbath was back at it with Ozzy in tow. Now that the Black Sabbath chapter is over, Tony is back with a new solo album, From The Dark, due on October 23rd.

Iommi was asked by Rolling Stone why he decided to do a solo album instead of releasing it under the Black Sabbath banner (he’d released a handful of Sabbath albums where he was the only original member). He replied,

“Well, Black Sabbath’s now finished as far as the band goes, really. Obviously, the last stuff was with Ozzy. Anything I’d do with Black Sabbath would just be me, and I don’t want to do that again. We’ve been there and done that.”

Iommi added that he wanted his Sabbath bandmate Geezer Butler to play on the album, but the timing didn’t work out.

“I wanted him to play on this album, but he couldn’t do it. He’s doing his own album, I think. Or at the time, something happened there, so he couldn’t come to England. I wanted to get it done and finally get it out, really.”

The first single is called “World Alone,” and it comes complete with a dystopian, movie-like music video.

Governor Evers activates WI National Guard to Fox Cities

(MENASHA, WI) — Governor Tony Evers announces he’s activating the Wisconsin National Guard to help Winnebago County with clean-up of tornado damage.

That decision came after Governor Evers toured the storm damaged areas Thursday morning.

No time frame is set for arrival of the first National Guard units to the Menasha, Fox Crossing, and Neenah area.

Mile of Music to raise funds for Fox Valley tornado recovery

APPLETON, Wis. — Mile of Music will use this year’s festival to support tornado recovery efforts and those impacted in communities across the Fox Valley.

Mile of Music returns July 30 through August 2 in Downtown Appleton. The event features nearly 650 live performances, music education experiences and special festival events spread across more than 30 venues.

Festival organizers announced Thursday that 5% of all official Mile of Music merchandise sales during the festival weekend will be donated to the Tornado Recovery Effort through the United Way Fox Cities, the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, and the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation (routed through Fox Cares Foundation.)

Several festival artists have also volunteered to donate a portion of their own merchandise sales to the Community Foundation’s Tornado Relief Effort.

Attendees can also help by rounding up purchases or making donations at concession stands in Jones Park, Houdini Plaza, and Lawrence Lawn. A portion of those proceeds will also benefit the tornado relief fund.

Following the festival, Mile of Music plans to host a special Mile of Love tornado relief concert in partnership with community collaborators. Organizers say 100% of the proceeds from that event will go directly toward tornado recovery efforts, with additional details to be announced.

Additionally, several community partners are boosting the fundraising effort. TDS Telecommunications LLC will match up to $10,000 in donations made during the festival. Those contributions will be directed through the Fox Cares Foundation, where Fox Communities Credit Union will also match donations to the Tornado Relief Support Fund up to $250,000.

“As a longtime telecommunications provider in the Fox Valley and a proud sponsor of Mile of Music, TDS is pleased to make this match and help support our community. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this week’s storm, and we’re committed to doing everything we can to help the region get back on its feet,” said Dawn Nowakowski, TDS Telecom Regional Manager of Field Marketing.

The combined donations will support recovery efforts through United Way Fox Cities, the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, and the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation.

(MADISON, WI) — Former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes drops out of the race for governor. In a social media post, Barnes says it is clear that Representative Francesca Hong is going to win the Democratic primary.

Barnes was in second place in the latest Marquette Law School Poll–but he had fallen behind Hong by an additional 12-percent in just the one week between the surveys.

1 killed, 1 hurt in Outagamie County crash

TOWN OF LIBERTY, Wis. — One person is dead — another is hurt — following a crash in Outagamie County.

The sheriff’s office says a car pulled out in front of a motorcycle at the intersection of State Highway 54 and County Road M in the town of Liberty around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday.

The 70-year-old Pennsylvania man operating the bike was pronounced dead at the scene. The 24-year-old New London man driving the car was treated for minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
